American Wigeons at Summit Lake

Photos of migrating birds and waterfowl are all the rage in Alaska these weeks as hundreds of thousands return to nest.   My Facebook feed is filled with photos of beautiful photos taken by people all around Alaska.

IF you'd like to see some of them, check the Facebook group called Birds of Alaska.

My litter clean up brought me to the edge of Summit Lake this afternoon, where I was able to get a few shots of a pair of American Wigeons before the clouds obscured the sunlight.

The rest of the story is that I knelt on the INSIDE of the highway guard rail and leaned my camera with its long lens on a guard rail post to steady the camera, as traffic zipped past.

  1. Your photos certainly make it feel like you could have reached right out and touched these lovely birds ... BE CAREFUL getting these photos though ... we don't want anything to happen to you as you are bracing yourself for just the right photo! Hugs. Patti and Cap

  2. And here I thought a Wigeon was an amphibious airplane that a friend of Patti's used to fly. Man alive these gigantic photos are the real deal. Love them. I hope we get to see you this summer. Cap and Patti ..
