It sat on top of the other tokens in the basket next to the cash register, decorated with a simple embossed design of a sailboat. I stirred the warm, heavy pewter tokens as I waited for the clerk in the Kailua-Kona store to ring up my souvenir tee shirt.
The sailboat kept making its presence known, but I have little connection with sailboats, and ignored it. On the reverse side of each coin was a word, and when I saw the one that read "Explore," I had found the one that spoke to me. That's what I've been doing these past several years, I thought. Exploring my life, my past, my future.
I turned it over to see what design went with "Explore." It was the sailboat. I purchased the coin and carry it with me always.

A few days later, mostly on a lark, I showed up for my first appointment with a psychic reader. I was skeptical; my step-daughter was encouraging. What the heck? It was only $25, and who knows?
Eventually the reader spoke of a former life in which I was a wealthy Greek merchant. She saw me reclining on a bench as I watched my merchant vessels sailing away on the horizon.
"Travel is good for you," she said. "Your spirit finds great wealth when you travel. And explore."
Fortune from my Chinese take out a few nights ago.
What a nice story. I don't think I was wealthy either in a past life or this one. :-)
