The China Journals, Chapter Six: Can You Hear Me Now???

The population of the world is 5 billion, give or take a few hundred thousand at any time.

This (above) is a public dual phone "booth" in China. Note that it's not being used.

Instead, 842,044,000 Chinese (give or take tens of thousands at any particular time) use cell phones.

That amounts to 62.9 per cent of the population of 1.3 billion--give or take...

In the U.S., on the other hand.--or other side of the globe, that is--285,610,580 cell phones are in use.

That's 91 per cent of the U.S. population.

I don't know who counts these things.

I think they figure it out from telecom providers.

Or whatever.

The U.S. ranks third in the number of cells phones in use.

China ranks first.

Never would have guessed it.

  1. I'm a rarity. I only carry a cell phone when I take long bike rides.
